barcode and food safety
Recently there has been some concern over food safety, especially if you are eating dumplings in Japan. Erm, normally the barcode on the food packaging won't tell you if the food is poisonous or not, but it gives you some idea of where the food is from. Personally I have experienced this: I examine all 6 sides of the carton box but still can't find the country of origin. Maybe there are some Arabic words that say "Made in China", but I won't know. This is where the barcode comes in. Most of the time you will see the barcode with a set of numbers underneath. Take note of the first 3 digits, that's the GS1 Prefix. Each code is assigned to different countries, for example 690 to 695 are assigned to China, 955 for Malaysia, 888 for Singapore (nice number). So if you see the first 3 digits contain 690, stay calm, slowly put the goods back to the shelf, take a step back, and.... ok I'm just kidding. But take note that it is not always true that the barcode reflects where the stuff is from. It merely tells us which country is assigned the code. I have eaten candy that is made in Thailand but has the Singapore code. =_=" So next time before you go to the supermarket, print the barcode list out. |
